About X-PAI
(Cross-Pacific AI Initiative)

X-PAI was launched to promote advanced scientific research centered on artificial intelligence, with the aim of addressing societal challenges and generating innovation that contributes to a sustainable society. This partnership builds on several years of collaboration between the University of Tsukuba and the University of Washington and has been realized with $25 million in support from Amazon and $25 million from NVIDIA. In 2024, a signing ceremony was held in the presence of then U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and then Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Masahito Moriyama. The initiative was also featured in the joint statement of the Japan–U.S. Summit as “a new framework for collaboration between Japanese and U.S. universities and companies in the field of AI.” In 2025, a kickoff meeting was held, marking the start of a wide range of collaborative research activities.
