The University of Tsukuba has agreed on a partnership with the University of Washington (Seattle, WA, USA) covering research, talent development, entrepreneurship and real-world implementation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signing ceremony was held at the U.S. Department of Commerce on April 9 at 3:00 p.m. local time , timed to coincide with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to the United States. It was witnessed by MEXT Minister Moriyama and Ambassador Yamada on the Japanese side and by Secretary of Commerce Raimondo on the U.S. side. The agreement was signed by President Kyosuke Nagata of the University of Tsukuba, Provost Tricia Serio of the University of Washington, Vice President Ned Finkle of NVIDIA, and Senior Vice President David Zapolsky of Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazon and NVIDIA have each pledged USD 25 million in support of the partnership. The agreement is expected to be included in the joint statement issued at the Japan\u2013U.S. summit meeting on April 10, as part of a new USD 110 million framework for AI collaboration between universities and companies in the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Nagata commented: “AI is one of the key technologies that will support society in the future, and advancing frontier research and developing talent in this field are major challenges. I hope that our collaboration through this partnership will play an important role in solving the many global-scale challenges the world faces.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof. Tetsuya Sakurai, Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research (C-AIR) and a professor in the Institute of Systems and Information Engineering, added: “By bringing together the University of Tsukuba, located in Tsukuba Science City, the University of Washington, located in Seattle with its concentration of high-tech companies, and our participating corporate partners, we expect Japan\u2013U.S. collaborative AI research to advance further and generate new innovation. Through this partnership, we will promote advanced AI research that leads to real-world implementation and cultivate world-leading global AI talent.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The partnership has grown out of several years of cooperation between the two universities. The University of Tsukuba extends its sincere thanks to Amazon and NVIDIA for their support, and to U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel for his considerable efforts on its behalf.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
